To students of Taekwondo,
The following is based on the written description of pattern
U-Nam from General Choi's book on Taekwon-Do published in
1959, and two videos of U-Nam on YouTube. The written
version can be found on the websites of the Tanny Academy
of Martial Arts ( www.tannymartialarts.com ), and Blue
Cottage Taekwondo ( www.bluecottagetkd.com ). The written
version in the General's book is not as detailed as for
the patterns in the Encyclopedia of Taekwondo, and the
directions are different. Also, in many cases the sections
( low, middle, high ) of hand and foot techniques are not
specified. The intent here is to describe the pattern
movements in a manner similar to that in the Encyclopedia
of Taekwondo, in hopes of aiding students who wish to learn
U-Nam tul. Questions, comments and suggestions are welcome.
Respectfully,
Robert Ito, Boulder Taekwon, 07/13/15 (with revision to move 21 on 08/18/16)

Pattern history : This pattern is named after the first
president of South Korea, Dr. Syngman Rhee, whose pen name
was U-Nam. However, Dr. Rhee was forced to resign after
nationwide student protests in 1960, and he fled to Hawaii
to live there in exile. Research so far indicates that
U-Nam only appeared in the edition of General Choi's book
"Taekwon-Do" published in 1959, and did not appear in later
Taekwon-Do publications.
